Rennes’s Ghanaian international striker Asamoah Gyan is on the verge of a move to English side Sunderland, a source close to the French club revealed on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old travelled to England on Monday to meet the Sunderland directors and is expected to sign a four-year contract.
The transfer has yet to be officially confirmed but Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti admitted during a training session on Tuesday morning that Gyan would be leaving the club.
Press reports claimed the transfer fee would be in the region of 14 million euros.
Gyan was one of the stars of the World Cup in South Africa, scoring three goals, but missed a last-minute penalty against Uruguay that would have made Ghana the first African side to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
