Bundesliga side Hamburg SV have all but confirmed that star player Milan Badelj will be leaving the club in the near future.
The Croatian has impressed since arriving from Dinamo Zagreb two years ago, having developed into a key player at Imtech Arena.
And while he was prepared to stay at the club despite the recent struggles, it appears his wage demands are proving too costly for HSV.
Namely, Bild is reporting that Badelj wants a 40 percent pay rise on his current €1.5 million yearly wage, but his current employers are not in a position to offer him such a deal.
“It’s true. There is too big a discrepancy between our ideas and those of Badelj,” sporting director Oliver Kreuzer explained to Bild. “Thus, a contract extension is very difficult.”
With his contract expiring in June 2015, Badelj should have no shortage of offers this summer, and Atletico Madrid appear to be one of the interested sides.
The Croatia international is doubtful for the 2014 World Cup after picking up a groin injury during a training camp in Austria.
