Hamburg, who went into the weekend on top, and last year’s champions Bayern both failed to bring their European form back to the domestic stage. Uefa Cup hopefuls Hamburg suffered their first home loss of the season when they were beaten 3-1 by in-form Wolfsburg.
“Sometimes we are not smart enough,” said coach Martin Jol. “We should have won to widen the gap to them, but we didn’t. We are still one point off top spot but we’ll bounce back after this defeat. My team have a strong character.”
