Hamburg have confirmed they are still following Basel midfielder Granit Xhaka, in spite of the heavy competition for the player’s signature.
The 19-year-old midfielder is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich just some of the interested clubs.
However, it appears that Hamburger SV are the only side to have made their interest for the Swiss international concrete, even if their offer was rejected by Basel.
In spite of the fact they could face stiff competition for the highly rated midfielder, Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen confirms the club are still keen.
“Yes, we are still looking at him,” Arnesen was quoted as saying in Bild.
“We have not given up despite the big competition. But, we are now waiting for Basel’s Champions League return leg against Bayern. The boy needs rest.”
Xhaka is currently playing his second professional season for Basel, but is already regarded as the most talented midfielder in Switzerland.
He is already a first team regular in Switzerland national team and is believed to have bigger potential than his teammate Xherdan Shaqiri, who is set to join Bayern Munich in the summer.
