Hamburg part ways with Veh

Bundesliga side Hamburg sacked coach Armin Veh on Sunday, a day after they suffered a 6-0 mauling at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Veh announced on Wednesday he would quit at the end of the season and pointed to internal conflicts within the club as the reason for his decision to step down.

Hamburg are in eighth place on the Bundesliga table, and prior to Saturday’s massacre had twice given up the lead to Mainz at home before being beaten 4-2 last Sunday.

An emergency meeting convened after the loss to Bayern on Saturday decided it would be best if Veh left his post immediately, with assistant coach Michael Oenning set to take charge for the rest of the season, assisted by Rodolfo Cardoso.

“After announcing he will leave at the end of the season and in light of the results from our last two games, we have decided to cut our ties and part company with Armin Veh,” Hamburg’s director of sport Bastian Reinhardt said.

Veh played as a midfielder with Borussia Monchengladbach in the early 1980s before his career was blighted by injuries.

The 50-year-old was formerly in charge of Stuttgart – who he led to the Bundesliga title in 2006-07 – and Wolfsburg, from where he was sacked in 2010.
