Hamburger SV have opted against extending the contract of striker Mladen Petric, sporting director Frank Arnesen has revealed.
The Croatian striker has just a couple of months left on his deal with HSV, and he was interested in signing a new deal at Imtech Arena.
However, Hamburger sporting director Frank Arnesen now explains that the club chiefs decided not to offer the Croat a contract extension.
“It was important for both sides to clarify this mater quickly,” Arnesen was quoted as saying in Bild.
“Mladen has scored a lot of important goals for Hamburger, he remains an important player, but we have chosen a different path.”
Petric arrived to German Bundesliga in July 2007, having joined Borussia Dortmund from Basel, but he signed for Hamburger after spending just one season at BVB.
The Croatian international quickly became a key member of the squad in Hamburger and went on to score 37 goals in 90 Bundesliga appearances.
The 31-year-old has been in fine form this term, having scored 6 goals in 17 league games.
Petric is still regarded as one of the best strikers in Bundesliga and he will have no shortage of offers come end of the season.
