West Ham are in talks to sign Gary O’Neil after his club Middlesbrough revealed they had accepted a bid for the midfielder.

Boro released a statement on their website on Monday concerning the 27-year-old, who has played in 18 games for the Championship club this season.

“Boro have accepted an undisclosed bid from English Premier League club West Ham for midielder Gary O’Neil,” the club confirmed.

“The Hammers have been given permission to discuss personal terms with the former Portsmouth man.”

West Ham manager Avram Grant has been keen to strengthen his midfield in a bid to bolster his side’s bid for survival, with a move for Steve Sidwell breaking down before his eventual signing at Premier League rivals Fulham.

Reports in the UK have suggested the Hammers’ bid for O’Neil is in the vicinity of 1.5 million pounds.
