As reported by L’Equipe, Hamza Mendyl has joined Bundesliga club Schalke from Lille for a deal believed to be worth around £5 million. The 20-year-old arrives in Germany after making just a handful of first-team appearances for the senior squad, although he was selected to be a part of Morocco’s World Cup squad in Russia earlier this summer.
Mendyl’s stock has certainly risen over the course of the last few months, although when it comes to the reasoning behind Schalke purchasing him, he may be left thinking that he still has a point to prove. That’s because reports suggest he’s being brought in courtesy of Bastian Oczipka’s injury, as the club attempt to force their way up the Bundesliga table this season.
Schalke will be competing in the DFB Cup tonight, before a major showdown against Wolfsburg next weekend as their campaign kicks into the next gear with a series of tough games.
