The first trophy of the year in Egyptian soccer went to Haras El Hodood, who beat reigning league champions Al Ahly 2-1 in Tuesday’s Super Cup game.
Haras didn’t actually win last season’s Egyptian Cup but replace ENPPI, who were stronger in the tournament’s final.
Ahmed Hassan put Haras in the lead after just four minutes and namesake Ahmed Abdulghani made it 2-0 shortly before the hour. African Footballer of the Year Mohamed Abou Treika pulled one back but it was too little, too late.
The result makes an end to Al Ahly’s dominance in the Super Cup, having won the trophy four consecutive times. The Egyptian Super Cup was first played in 2000.
