Have Arsenal done enough in the transfer window to retain their top four berth?

Arsenal were one of the busiest teams in the Premier League on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners managed to bring in four players into the currently threadbare squad.

The arrival of Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos and Yossi Benayoun will no doubt strengthen the Gunners squad.

The big question is has Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger done enough to keep the club in top four of the Premier League this season?

Midfielders

The players that Arsenal have signed are good players, there is no question about that. However they have lost two world-class midfielders in  the shape of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas. Their replacements are not quite in the same league.

Spaniard Mikel Arteta will be seen as his compatriots replacement. At £10million he hasn’t cost the club a major fee. At 29 years of age, he has stated he felt like he needed to take this opportunity to play Champions League football.

When he is in top form Arteta is an outstanding player. Unfortunately in the last 18 months he has looked disinterested and stale at Goodison Park. He has never recovered from an injury he picked up at Newcastle in January 2009. Arteta has also endured injury problems in recent months.

This move was a good one for everyone really. Arteta definitely needed something to change for him to rediscover his best form, Everton needed the money and Arsenal needed a creative player to attempt to fill the gap in their midfield.

Yossi Benayoun has always been an underrated player in my opinion. In fact I believe that the Israeli could be a better signing than Arteta. The 31 year-old midfielder has got good vision and is capable of producing a match winning moment.

His time at Chelsea was dogged by injury and he made just 11 appearances for the Blues. He is however now fit and playing again. Signing Benayoun on a loan deal could be a masterstroke from Arsene Wenger.

Defenders

Wenger has finally signed some much needed defensive reinforcements. Arsenal have been crying out for a commanding centre-back and Per Mertesacker could be the answer to Arsenal fans prays. The giant German endured a nightmare year at Werder Bremen last season.

The club struggled and Mertesacker was made a scapegoat for that poor season. However,  before last season he was highly rated and was tracked by some Europe’s biggest names. Mertesacker has all the attributes that Arsenal have been crying out for.

He is big, strong and commanding. He also has good leadership qualities, which have been badly missing from the Arsenal team for a long time. I have no doubts that the German international will go on to prove a key signing for the Gunners this season.

Full-back Andre Santos has arrived from Fenerbahce. The 28 year-old is very much a typical Brazilian full-back, he is considered better at going forward than defending. However from the little I have seen of Santos he is a decent defender.

He has quite a bit of European experience, having represented Fenerbahce in European competition. Arsenal definitely needed a replacement for the departed Gael Clichy, with Kieran Gibbs currently struggling with injuries. Arsenal could have done a lot worse than Santos.

Stronger

Arsenal fans must feel like the future is slightly brighter after the new additions. The Gunners now look stronger than they did before the transfer deadline day. Arsenal fans may have wanted different players to arrive on deadline day but they will now have to accept that the Gunners squad is complete, at least until January anyway.

Doubtful

I really believe that Arsenal will struggle to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season. The loss of Fabregas and Nasri was a major blow and without truly world-class additions Arsenal will struggle.

The Gunners will now have to rely on youngsters like Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey to drive the team on from midfield. If Arteta can stay fit and rediscover his best form then he may be able to drive Arsenal forward, but that’s a big if.

Struggle

I really like Arsenal and their boss Arsene Wenger. However I believe yesterday’s transfer business was too little too late if the Gunners want to keep their place at the top table of English football. I would like to see the gunners finish in the Champions League spots this season. At the moment though it seems very unlikely.

Have Arsenal made good signings on deadline day?

    Also question for all.

Why hasn’t some big name investor bought Everton? Surely they’d be one of the cheapest buys with their financial troubles, they are a well established premier league team, they have a great coach, great tradition, and a broad based support. Why wouldn’t The Blues be a great investment for a football lover?

The ideal starting 11 for the Gunners wouldn’t be that bad, I think all of us can agree. The problem is that many are inconsistent (i.e. Theo and the little Russian) or injury prone (i.e. Jack and Vermaelen). And when bad things happen, which they do, do the remaining players have it to fill in and get the result? As seen by the Gunners start to the season (1 point from 3 games), I believe the answer is no.

And yeah David, as long as they aren’t playing my Liverpool, Everton all the way. A lot of my friends scousers and they are first and foremost Blues. Most of them support Liverpool secondly though. I guess they don’t call it the friendly derby for nothing?

seriously, i believe Wenger made a very good signing and can make the top four this season, if Benayoun and Arteta can keep their fitness going. I personally respect Benayoun alot, he’s great at passing, has great foresight n quick feet. I believe that if Benayoun can stay out of injury, Nasri will not be missed by gunners and also that if Arteta wil keep his fitness, the effects of Fabregas departure will be minimal. Dont forget that jack, van persie and some other few are great player and can win match for the coach anytime. The defenders brought in are added advantages to the team. I didnt see clichy’s departure as a big deal, i didnt fancy him as a great left back for a team like arsenal. If arsenal can manage their injury worries, then a top four position will not be a problem for them.

Thank you David u agree with Dylan and i too agree with u both its not daddy’s home afterall. Arsene is a clever crow and my lang has a famous thaught-“Clever Crow sits on Shit”..
Same is applicable here when he thaught he was totally wrong when he used his fingers to dig his red nose during the world was busy recruiting stars to studd in squads, he was awake in the last day and got the s-crap again.
I only agree wit 2transfers to be OK in shape of Per Mertesacker and Santos to enhance defence but what about midfield, only a fool would rely on benayoun and wid some quality of Arteta, then why everton was not in top four, HA!! Weeviv is nutts as he doubts on Nasri, “fool watch him again” where his shade covered players like dzeko, silva, aguero and many more. I suggest Arsenal fans, players and the board, for to achieve some respect kick Wenger out out and out right now. I bet if u give them Messi then even they’ll be not in top four. After all managers are key factor to get succes then why real madrid pay criminal to Mourinho or villas boas was recruited….. You guys have to be serious on this.

When Arsene signed Nasri, there was also a lot of dought regarding his quality, but look how that turned out.
I also rate Yossi very highly and to be quite honest, Wenger hasn,t done too bad when it came to signings (and thats an understatement),

Arsenal will most likely finish 6th but may push Tottenham hard and go 5th. Liverpool are a lock for the top 4 in my opinion. Arseanl and Tottenham are an injury to vermaellen and rvp or bale, modric or vdv from dropping below stoke to 7th.

I really believe that this is the season that spells the end of the Wenger era. I’d even go as far to say Manchester City will replace them as a member of the “Big Four”. My guess is that the Gunners end with a 2009/10 Liverpool-esque season and finish sixth or seventh.

As a Bremen fan and Everton supporter (except when they play the Reds!) these are terrible signings. First, nothing against Arteta but he’s not good enough to even coming close to replace Cesc/Nasri. Arteta is a good player for an above average team (Everton, Aston Villa, ect.) he can not cut it at the top level. I imagine the Arsenal forward 6 will look something like… Arshavin, Van P, Theo, the Arteta, Song, and Wilshire (with Ramsey getting a lot of time). Don’t get me wrong they are all good players, but aside from maybe Van P. and eventually Wilshire none of them are elite. And then there’s Yossi. He was a second team player at both Liverpool land Chelsea and now he’s at Arsenal. You can’t really think of him as a significant addition to Arsenal if he couldn’t cut it at Arsenal’s rivals. If anything he’s nothing more than another Rosicky. As far as Santos goes, I’m sure he’ll be a solid edition but you can’t exactly build a team around an outside back (unless your name is Roberto Carlos or maybe Dani Alves). As far as Mert. goes, on paper he looks great. However, he’s not quite world class. As a Bremen fan one of the biggest things he struggled with was players who could change direction quickly or simply run right past him. Sure he’s ideal if you’re trying to defend against Big Man Andy, but if you’re trying to keep out Suarez… well you’re done for. At the very least he’s a big powerful man. Something Arsenal haven’t had in quite sometime. They’ll be lucky if they finish in the top four this season. Yes they’ve made signings, but are they really elite signings that’ll keep you in the top four? I really don’t think so.
