Hecking: Nobody believed in Wolfsburg

Dieter Hecking voiced his delight with Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie and was quick to point out nobody believed the Bundesliga side could spring a surprise ahead of the game.

Ricardo Rodriguez converted a penalty to open the scoring after Casemiro had felled Andre Schurrle inside the area, before Maximilian Arnold made it two after some great work from Bruno Henrique down the right.

The Wolfsburg coach feels the referee made the right call to award a penalty and had special words of praise for Bruno Henrique following his fine outing.

“Tuesday I looked into your eyes and nobody believed in what I said,” Hecking told reporters. “But you see, anything is possible in football.

“You have to put a lot of energy in your game when you play against a top team like Madrid. If Madrid open the door for us, we have to barge through it.

“The penalty? There was contact so it’s a clear spot kick for me.

“Bruno Henrique was one of the key players tonight. We wanted to surprise Real with this player.”

Wolfsburg will be looking to book their place in the semi-finals in Tuesday’s return at the Santiago Bernabeu.
