Schalke boss Horst Heldt has confirmed an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Felipe Santana.
Santana has had to be content with a backup role at the Westfalenstadion this season, with Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic the preferred pairing.
But Heldt is keen on bringing him to the Veltins Arena with the lure of more regular first-team football.
He told Reviersport: “We are interested in signing this player (Felipe Santana).”
Heldt stopped short of confirming any details on fees and also pointed out that no official approach would be made until the end of the season.
Dortmund take on Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday and Santana could be set to play a part, with Hummels a doubt due to injury.
“Due to the circumstances, his current club still have matches to play,” Heldt said. “We will not reveal or confirm anything in this matter. We fully respect this club (Dortmund).”
Santana has made 22 appearances this season for Dortmund and scored the crucial goal against Malaga to send them through to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League.
