Former Bayern Munich captain Thomas Helmer believes his old club can get past Arsenal and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
He also thinks that the Bavarians, who are 18 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, could win both fixtures in their European tie, insisting that last year’s runners-up have enough quality to overturn Arsenal at the Emirates.
“That should not be a problem. Arsenal always play well, but they are never dangerous. I would not be surprised if Bayern not only wins their home tie, but also the away game in London,” Helmer told TZ Online.
“At the moment you have to say Bayern are playing well in every competition. The coach is doing everything right, the mood in the team is superb, does the game system – and they have no injuries.
“So, once again, it rests on Bayern Munich to defend the honour of the German clubs in Europe after the weak Europa League results this week.”
Bayern will be looking to finish the season in style, with the Champions League trophy providing a perfect platform for the departure of Jupp Heynckes who is set to retire at the end of the season, making way for the announced arrival of Pep Guardiola.
