Henderson: We can beat City

Jordan Henderson says Liverpool hold no fear ahead of their meeting with English Premier League leaders Manchester City on Tuesday.

Kenny Dalglish’s men travel to Eastlands on the back of an impressive 3-1 home win over Newcastle on Friday, while their away form has been similarly impressive.

City sit top of the Premier League having suffered just one defeat all season, but Liverpool have lost just once in seven games against the club since Sheikh Mansour’s cash injection at the Manchester club.

And after drawing 1-1 at Anfield earlier in the season, Henderson is confident the Reds can maintain their good record.

“I don’t think City are leagues ahead of the rest of us,” Henderson said.

“Obviously they have some outstanding players and are a good team. But we’ll go there looking to put up a good fight.”

“Beating Newcastle on Friday gives us a massive boost going into the City game. We’ll go into the game in confident mood and we know we’ll need to produce a good performance.”

“We take belief from how well we did against them at Anfield in November. We know City are a good team, but we just need to play our own game.”

“We’re doing fine, but we need to finish teams off more often. We’re playing some good stuff in the build-up to chances. But we’re on the right path and we will go to City with a positive attitude.”

The former Sunderland man has also hailed the return from injury of captain Steven Gerrard, who inspired the Merseysiders to victory against Alan Pardew’s men, scoring in the process.

“Steven is an inspiration for everyone here,” Henderson said.

“You could see that when he came on (against Newcastle) and the whole atmosphere of the place lifts.”

“I think that shows just how good he is. He can change games and he is a massive player for Liverpool. Whenever he’s on the pitch, he’s a massive threat to the opposition.”

“I don’t have to speak for how good he is as everyone knows he’s an outstanding player. It’s a real plus for us that he’s back.”

Henderson – who has started 15 league games for Liverpool this campaign – also believes he can improve his own game by playing alongside the England man and said he watches Gerrard regularly in training.

“I do try and watch him and see how he does things, and there are great players at Liverpool that I can try and learn from,” he said.

“I need to concentrate on my own game and keep on improving. Hopefully players like Stevie can help me do that.”
