Universidad de Chile starlet Angelo Henriquez is closing in on a move to Old Trafford after undergoing a medical at Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester on Tuesday, the Daily Mail understands.
Henriquez, 18, will reportedly cost United £4 million, which is roughly the same amount the Red Devils paid for Crewe Alexandra playmaker Nick Powell earlier this summer.
The 18-year-old striker netted 11 league goals in 17 appearances last term, leading Universidad de Chile to their second consecutive Chilean Primera División title.
Manchester City, who beat Arsenal, Chelsea, Internazionale and Juventus to the signing of Le Havre teenager Jules Olivier Ntcham earlier this week, were also reportedly keen on Henriquez.
Welbeck agrees five-year extension
England international forward Danny Welbeck has agreed a five-year contract extension with his boyhood club Manchester United, Sky Sports reports.
Welbeck enjoyed a breakout year in 2011-12, tallying nine league goals and four assists in 30 games (23 starts).
The 21-year-old striker surprisingly found himself ahead of both Dimitar Berbatov, the Red Devils’ top goal scorer in 2010-11, and Javier “El Chicharito” Hernandez, who was named United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in 2010-11, in Sir Alex Ferguson’s pecking order last term.
Subsequently, Welbeck was able to earn himself a place in England’s Euro 2012 squad. The United forward made four starts for the Three Lions at the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship in Poland-Ukraine, netting one goal.
Liverpool keen on Tello
According to The Sun, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly keen on 21-year-old FC Barcelona winger Cristian Tello.
Tello, who has entered the final year of his contract, will likely cost the Reds a fee between £5 million and £7 million.
In comparison, England winger Stewart Downing, who failed to record an assist or goal in 36 league appearances (28 starts) last term, cost the Merseysiders nearly £20 million in the summer of the 2011.
The Spain youth international was very efficient in front of goal for the Catalans in 2011-12, bagging seven goals in 22 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish giants.
However, the Reds must compete with the likes of Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal, Benfica, Malaga and Valencia for the Spaniard’s signature.
With that said, Rodgers may be forced to make an inflated bid for Tello amid reports that bitter Merseyside rivals Everton are in pole position to land Manchester City winger Adam Johnson on loan.
In other news, Liverpool have reportedly joined the race for out-of-favour Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin. The Turkey international is also reportedly being chased by Premier League giants Arsenal.
