Huffed
When it looked as though United had huffed and puffed all they could, up popped Javier Hernandez to bag the nineteenth goal of his quite exceptional first season in English football. There have been some good signings this season, like Rafael van der Vaart, and some less good ones, like Marouane Chamakh, but Hernandez may just be the best of the lot.
Even Sir Alex Ferguson has been surprised by the impact Hernandez has had,
“Javier has done better than everyone expected. We thought that because it was his first year, he would just get used to the English game and get strengthened up. He has passed all those tests. He is first in at nine o’clock every morning and he is the last to leave. He is a truly dedicated boy.”
Enjoying
The £6 million signing is enjoying his football and enjoying scoring goals, but it is winning the Premier League title that the Mexican says is the most important thing.
“Of course it’s a dream come true, this season. If we win the Premier League, that’s an unbelievable thing. If I could swap all the goals for us to win the league then I would do it. We know we are almost there, but we can’t afford to think like we’ve already won it. We go day by day, week by week. I’m very happy, but I’m happier because we got the three points. Here at Manchester United we need to win every game and it doesn’t matter who scores.”
Confident
After the three points yesterday, Sir Alex Ferguson was feeling much more confident about winning back the title.
“Games are running out for our rivals and we’re up for it. I enjoy this critical stage of a season when we are involved in big games that come thick and fast and I think we will be OK.”
Two of United’s remaining four games are against their nearest challengers Chelsea and Arsenal. Sir Alex thinks that his side are more than capable of getting what they need from those games.
Media
“The thing that puzzles me is the media keep saying Arsenal and Chelsea have got to play us still, like we’re going to lose to them, but why shouldn’t we win those games? As I said to the players, forget all that nonsense. Just try to win your games and you’ll be all right, keep your heads and don’t get carried away.”
Chelsea also picked up three points with a late, wait for it, yes it is true, Fernanado Torres goal, against West Ham, and Arsenal will probably win at Bolton today as well. That will leave United six points clear of the other two and with just four games left, it is likely that just a single point from the two games against their rivals would be enough for United to pick up their ninteenth title and overtake the long held record of Liverpool.
When that is achieved, in many ways Fergie’s work will be done. I have little doubt however that he will be back next season looking for number twenty.
