(GSM) – Hertha Berlin were assured of their relegation from the Bundesliga on Saturday after a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen ended their 13-year run in the top flight.
The defeat ensured Hertha they will go into the final weekend of matches four points behind their nearest competition after 17th-placed Hannover romped to a 6-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
In their typical fashion, Hertha jumped out to an early lead in the 12th minute when Raffael found the back of the net.
But Leverkusen fought back just shy of the hour mark as Manuel Friedrich nodded home from Michal Kadlec’s cross.
The final automatic relegation spot will be decided on the final weekend as Bochum and Nürnberg are favorites while Hannover are just barely on the right side of the line.
Kaiserslautern have already secured promotion from the second division for next season, and St. Pauli have a chance to join them on Sunday.
