Heynckes delighted by Bayern performance

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has praised his team following their impressive 3-0 win over Kaiserslautern at the Fritz-Walter Stadion.

A Mario Gomez hat-trick secured all three points for the travelling Bavarians as Bayern took advantage of their stuttering rivals to move to the top of the Bundesliga with nine points from their opening four games.

Despite being pleased with the performance, the 66-year-old tactician still felt there was room for improvement within his ranks and has called on the team to become more clinical in their opponents’ area.

“That was our best game so far, in my opinion,” he said.

“The team played as if everything was happening automatically, but we still have to be more effective in front of goal. We shut them out completely in defence, and I liked that a lot.”

“Coming here to Kaiserslautern and winning 3-0 isn’t easy. My team looked very well balanced today, our zonal game was wonderful and our passing was good and accurate. We’d have been 2-0 up after 10 minutes if [Kaiserslauten’s goalkeeper Kevin] Trapp hadn’t made such good saves.

“I always said the team would improve with every game, and I think we can still play better than that.”

Gomez, meanwhile, called on his team-mates to continue their hard work and not become complacent despite sitting top of the league.

“We can’t start thinking it’s all just going to fall into place now. Every week, we’ll have to work hard for our success, and all of us have to keep thinking defensively. If we do, it’ll be hard to score against us,” he said.

The German top-flight is set for a two-week break due to international football and Thomas Muller believes that Bayern have done brilliantly to enter this period on the back of a fine run of form.

“It was quite heated at the start, but we mastered it well, and we have a striker up front who puts the ball in the net,” he said. “We battled for every inch of ground.”

“I’m delighted we’ve taken nine points from our last three Bundesliga matches. It sets us up perfectly for the internationals.”

The Allianz Arena outfit next face Freiburg on September 10.
