Heynckes delighted with Mainz thumping

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes was full of praise for his side after a ‘well deserved’ 3-1 win over Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Heynckes’ men went 2-0 up after goals from new striker Mario Mandzukic and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Adam Szalai pulled one back for the visitors from the penalty spot, before Toni Kroos sealed the win in the second minute of added time.

“We produced an excellent half-hour of football,” Heynckes said.

“The goals were truly outstanding. The 3-1 victory was well deserved, especially after Javi Martinez came on, although we were too passive in the 15 minutes before the break.

“We played well going forward, and were very intelligent in our overall play nonetheless.”

Mandzukic – who has scored three times since moving from Wolfsburg – praised his team-mates for helping him get on the scoresheet.

“One player can’t play on his own. I have good team-mates who create opportunities for me and I need to take them,” he said.

“I believe I have done my job well and I want to continue like this and maybe even get better.”

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up will now hope to translate their domestic form to the continental stage, when they host Valencia in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
