The 67-year-old steps down after the two years in charge of the capital club at the end of the seaon and will be replaced by Pep Guardiola.
Schalke appointed Jens Keller in December after a poor run of results but things have not improved with just one win in their last 11 league matches.
German tabloid Bild reports that Schalke have held talks with Heynckes, who has not ruled out continuing coaching once his Bayern contract ends in June.
Heynckes, who is in London as Bayern take on Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, has previously had a brief stint with Schalke when he led the club to seventh place in the 2004/04 Bundesliga season.

Borussia Dortmund after building a 15-point lead at the top of the
standings.
