Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes was delighted with the performance of his team in their 3-0 win over Cologne on Friday.
Things got off to a bad start for the hosts at Allianz Arena, with Franck Ribery sent off in the 33rd minute after a squabble with Henrique Sereno, but they responded through strikes from Mario Gomez, David Alaba and Toni Kroos after the break.
Heynckes was pleased with the effort of his side and said they had merited the three points.
“We fully deserved to win, and it was the right margin of victory too,” Heynckes said.
“We dominated the match and translated our footballing class into goals.”
“Cologne parked the bus today. I’ve rarely seen a team with such a defensive approach.”
“Ribery’s sending off made it even more difficult, but my team responded magnificently. We struck at the decisive moments, we let them have nothing at all, and we kept our discipline.”
Heynckes said he is looking forward to the return of midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger from a shoulder injury, and added that influential Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who played 75 minutes of the match, is still working his way back into peak condition.
“Once we have Schweinsteiger back, and once Robben is fully fit again, we’ll certainly do well in the second half of the season,” he said.
