Hodgson remains upbeat

Roy Hodgson will not let speculation about his future at Liverpool weigh him down, despite pressure intensifying after losing to Wolves.

Chants for the return of club legend Kenny Dalglish returned around Anfield as Wednesday’s game drew to close, with Liverpool fans distraught after a sole strike from Stephen Ward in the 56th minute sealed the points for Wolves in the English Premier League encounter.

“I am getting used to it. That is the way it is,” Hodgson told soccernet.com.

“We’ve had to live that with quite a long time now as ever since I came here the famous Anfield support has not really been there.”

“There were the problems with the owners, then Kenny being so popular and not getting the job and it being given to me. It is sad and I don’t like hearing those things because I am trying to do the best job I can do.”

“I am working as hard as I can so I can’t say it is something I really appreciate. At the same time I am not in control of those things and it is the Kop’s way of showing they are not happy with what the team is doing.”

“As manager you take responsibility for that so I have to take that criticism on the chin as well. It was as bad a team performance as we have given, especially at Anfield.”

“We’ve let the fans down and they made that perfectly clear to us and I can only empathise with them because if I was a supporter I would be disappointed with that.”

Wolves’ loss to Wigan on Sunday cast grave doubts on their ability to preserve their Premier League status.

But their upset win over Liverpool – their first victory at Anfield in 27 years – have re-ignited the strugglers’ hopes.

“I thought we were the better team and deserved it,” Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said.

“I think most people’s perception of Wolves is that we are going down after being beaten by Wigan and being bottom of the league.”

“They probably thought we would come here and sit back and get our backsides slapped and go home with nothing.”

“We decided we weren’t going to have that and we were going to come here and have a go. I guess fortune favours the brave.”
