Hodgson wants consistency from Oxlade-Chamberlain

England manager Roy Hodgson says young winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain needs to maintain a level of consistency and not drop below it.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was impressive in the early stages of England’s 2014 World Cup qualifying win over Moldova on Friday, but dropped off the pace significantly in the second half.

The 19-year-old will want to ensure there is no repeat of his form slump in England’s next World Cup qualifier at home to Ukraine on Tuesday.

The match will be Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first competitive game at Wembley, and Hodgson plans to sit down with the Arsenal youngster to explain his expectations moving forward.

Oxlade-Chamberlain excelled down the left flank throughout the first half at the Zimbru Stadium before his display fizzled out after the interval.

“I thought he’d been very good through that first half,” Hodgson told reporters.

“But we’d made it clear to him we intended to take him off after 60 minutes, so I think he forgot to play in those first 15 minutes of the second half.

“That will be an interesting lesson for him as well.”

Prior to the Moldova game, Oxlade-Chamberlain admitted he was still learning his trade at international and domestic levels after only breaking into the first team at Arsenal at the beginning of 2012.

“I’ve always been a relaxed person, but when I get on the pitch I rely on my ability and trust in myself,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has six England caps to his name.

“It’s nice Roy has put such faith in me so far, but I don’t consider myself an automatic regular starter yet.”
