Hoffenheim midfielder Boris Vukcevic has been placed in an induced coma after his car crashed into a truck on Friday.
The 22-year-old, who has made 55 Bundesliga appearances for the club since joining from Stuttgart’s youth team in 2008, underwent an operation after the collision and is now reported to be in a ‘critical condition’.
Vukcevic had to be airlifted from the site of the accident, which took place on the road between Hoffenheim and Heidelberg. The driver of the truck reportedly escaped with only minor injuries.
Hoffenhim released a statement following the crash to confirm the ‘life-threatening injuries’ sustained by the midfielder.
“This news has shaken us,” Hoffenheim general manager Andreas Mueller said in a statement. “The team, the coach and everybody here is shocked.
“Our thoughts are with Boris and his family.”
Hoffenheim are due to host Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
