Blackpool boss Ian Holloway expressed shock after his side pulled off an unprecedented double of league victories against Liverpool.
Holloway’s side came from a goal down to beat the Reds 2-1 at Bloomfield Road on Wednesday, just three months after winning by the same scoreline at Anfield.
The manager praised the fighting spirit of his players after goals from Gary Taylor-Fletcher and DJ Campbell overturned Fernando Torres’ opener, yet was quick to admit he would have never tipped this result.
“If you’d said to me at the start of the season we’d get six points off Liverpool home and away I’d have said you were doolally (insane),” Holloway said.
“I’d have got you a nice straitjacket and said ‘get lost’, but we’ve done it.”
“(Wednesday’s win) is the best of the lot I think – to go behind so early it could have been a long, horrible night, but I’m so proud of my lads.”
Holloway also scoffed at a 3.5 million pound offer from Aston Villa for Blackpool captain Charlie Adam, saying they would need to up their offer if they hoped to prise the midfielder away from Bloomfield Road.
“They can shove their bid wherever they like it because if they think he is only worth 3.5 million pounds they are watching a different game to the one I am,” Holloway said.
“I think he owes us to stay and then he will have a choice as long as his arm.”
“If Manchester United ring me up tomorrow and make me a realistic offer I might have to consider it but until then – dream on.”
New Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said he has noticed some positive signs from his team despite overseeing two defeats since taking over from Roy Hodgson.
“It was pleasing to see their commitment and effort when you consider a lot of them played against United for an hour with 10 men,” Dalglish said.
“We had some good positives but the most positive thing that is going to help the players most of all is to pick up some wins.”
“It’s all very well being a decent side but every side which has been successful and has ever done anything needs that bit of luck.”
“At the moment that has turned against us but the longer we stick in and the less sorry we feel for ourselves the better chance we will have of correcting it.”
