Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier hailed his side’s Midlands derby victory on Saturday as the beginning of their Premier League revival.
Houllier has come under fire for Villa’s lean run since he took over managerial duties in September, with the Birmingham club languishing perilously close to the relegation zone.
But a 2-1 win over local rivals West Bromwich Albion could be the victory that sets Houllier’s side back on track in the league.
“It’s an important win for the club, the fans and the players because we’ve been in a difficult period. We’re not out of it yet and we need to stick together and push on,” Houllier told Sky Sports.
Houllier has blooded several young players this season, and another player to make his first start for the club was American full-back Eric Lichaj, who impressed his boss.
“It was his first start in the Premier League and I’m pleased for him. He’s come from the Academy and I’m happy and his contribution was very useful,” Houllier said.
