How can fans boo their own players?

englandfansI’ve been a football fan for a long time and have been to hundreds of games. One thing that really does annoy me and confuse me is the abuse that the fans can give their own players.

Every week around the grounds in England there is a minority of fans who are constantly on the backs on their own team and single out individuals.

Boo’s

The worse piece of abuse a player can receive is that of being booed by his own fans. It’s been widely reported that former England captain John Terry will be booed by some of the England fans at Wembley tonight.

The John Terry scandal has got tiresome now. It’s not going to do any good getting on the back of one of England’s key players. Although John Terry has thick skin, his performances for Chelsea have suffered in recent weeks.

Some have suggested that it might just be a natural dip in form but it’s too much of a coincidence that he’s struggling for form after what’s happened. He brought the situation on himself but now is not the time for recriminations with the World Cup just a few months away.

No matter what he has done he will still be out there wearing that white shirt with pride. He won’t let the boo’s effect him, he will get on with his game and do the best he can for England. These fans need to spend more time supporting the team and less singling out one of our key players.

Rough

I have also heard rumours that if Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross wins his first cap against Egypt, he could also receive boo’s for the tackle that caused Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey such an nasty injury last weekend. I don’t believe there was any malice in the tackle, despite the young defenders history of causing nasty injuries.

Shawcross is a promising young defender, who was obviously upset after causing Ramsey such horrible injury. He was in tears after the challenge and surely if the tackle was meant to cause injury he wouldn’t have been so shaken up by the incident.

The 22 year-old is touted as a future top class defender and has already been linked with moves to Arsenal and Liverpool, having started out at Manchester United. If he makes his debut for England tonight and receives boo’s his confidence could be destroyed forever, all this for what appears to have been an accident.

Previous

England fans have a history of booing their own players. I seem to remember a small majority of England fans booing full-back Ashley Cole, when the Chelsea star was going through a difficult period. He came through it and has performed superbly for England. I won’t go into his off the field antics though.

The other player I remember being booed is striker Peter Crouch. Now I have mentioned in my previous articles that he’s not exactly my favourite England player. However the beanpole Tottenham striker has a superb scoring rate at international level and hasn’t done anything to deserve such treatment.

As far as I know he’s that rare animal, an England international with a working moral compass. Just because he is gangly in appearance he seems to be disliked. His style is often clumsy but he gets goals and that’s his job.

Good

I have to say the majority of England fans are fair minded and support their team in the right way. They get behind the Three Lions and support England with a passion. You only have to look at the number of supporters that travel to major tournaments trouble free when England are involved.

The England supporters haven’t always been the best behaved but in recent years a crackdown on hooligans has helped improved the image of English football fans. However that hard work will be slightly tarnished by a minority of supporters, who decide to boo our ex-captain tonight.

I would like to know if any of our readers can recall any of their players being booed, whether it’s at international level or club.

Let’s just hope the England fans dont chant “I hope your kid(s) die of cancer!” to Terry like they did to Becks. . . otherwise we should get FIFA to do something about it.

Yeah Brad, I remembered the Beckham incidents. Beckham got booed at every away ground in the country. I think the Galaxy fans felt betrayed by Beckham.

However he won everybody over both for the Galaxy and England with his performances and determination. I believe that Terry will win everybody over once the whole story has blown over.

Soccer is a love-hate relationship. Hero to enemy, stars to the gutters and like they say, the rest is history. John Terry should not be playing in the World Cup, simple as that. A great team is all about morale, trusting all your players and the willingness to go into battle for each other.

At least all the England players will know their girlfriends and wives are safe if Johnny travels with them LOL

Well, that is OUT of the question, as even though he once was a Blue, he isnt now. CFC fans booed him for that.

Sometimes, the only way to show one of our own players we’re not pleased with something they did- such as a simple mistake, or went down either the Terry route or the Maradona road- is to boo at them.

By the way, David, haven’t you ever heard of the English fans booing Beckham, up until the critical moment in qualifying for the 02 WC? Or when he returned to the Galaxy last summer, after his spell with Milan?
I have booed a few of Manchester United’s players in the past few years, notably Vidic for getting red against Liverpool, but once the game is over, and the victim is on the field again, I dont boo them. Same thing with the U.S., even though we lost today to the Dutchies, 2-1.

The English are typical examples of such irresponsible boo fans.In this matter, JT brought it upon himself! I’m a Chelsea fan,I love John Terry and he’s my captain. But, the truth must be said. Having said that,I must add that, hot as this situation may be now, everything will fizzle out. However, the one thing that will remain is JT’s form on the pitch. If he continues to churn out sterling performances like the good old ‘bionic man’ he has proven to be for Chelsea in recent seasons, then it’s just a matter of time – he will surely win the fans back. By the way, was it not Wayne Bridge who was being more loudly booed at the last Chelsea 2 : Man City 4 game?
