I couldn’t believe my ears yesterday. I heard Liverpool fans criticising their captain and inspirational midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Not fit
Despite not being fully fit and just coming back from injury, a minority of so called Liverpool fans are berating their midfield. Some even said that his head and heart are not in the game.
As an Everton fan, I find it ridiculous that Reds fan are attacking the player who has dragged the team out of the mire so many times in recent years.
It has really annoyed me the number of times he’s popped up with vital goals for Liverpool, to the delight of the smug Anfield faithful. I’m surprised Gerrard hasn’t got backache by now he’s been carrying Liverpool for that long.
Where would Liverpool be without Gerrard? The answer is probably a struggling midtable side. Before Torres arrived at the club Liverpool were accused of being a one-man team. And to a certain extent, those accusations were correct. Take Gerrard’s influence away from the Liverpool team and they seem to lose heart and direction.
Famous win
Steven Gerrard was the inspiration for Liverpool’s amazing come back in the 2005 European Cup victory. Lots of people have said its Rafa Benitez who turned the result around at half-time, but there was one man on that pitch who wouldn’t give up.
The captain scored a goal, won a penalty which resulted in another goal and covered every blade of grass. He showed the kind of heart and soul that was missing from the first half. He has bailed Liverpool out on so many occasions it’s unbelievable.
True red
Steven Gerrard is a red through and through, despite a picture of him sporting an Everton kit as a youngster, his allegiance has always been with the red side of Merseyside. He’s became an iconic figure in the history of the club, a true Liverpool great. There are few players in the Premier League that have such feeling for a club as Gerrard does for Liverpool.
Time to move on
Steven Gerrard’s has won virtually every trophy in the game, except the Premier League trophy. The shape Liverpool are in at the moment he’s unlikely to ever achieve that with his beloved Reds. At 29 he’s got a few years left in him to win that missing medal, but maybe its time for him to consider a move away from Anfield. There’s only one English side with the capital to be able to afford Gerrard and that’s Manchester City of course. However the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid could have enough clout to prise him away from Anfield.
Gerrard has previously shown great loyalty to the Reds by rejecting a big money move to Chelsea. However Liverpool seem to be moving backwards. No matter how loyal you are to your team, at times that loyalty can be tested. His loyalty must be tested when he hears Liverpool fans criticising him. Though knowing Gerrard he will just work harder and strive to do better.
Support
Liverpool are in big trouble and the last thing they need at the moment is the fans getting on the backs on their best players. Gerrard really needs the support of fans to get back to his best. When he is fully-fit, I’m sure he will inspire the team again.
Gerrard has shown great loyalty to the club, it’s time for the fans to give Gerrard time to recover from his injury and show him the same loyalty he’s shown the club. If the minority who have criticised the skipper don’t, then they might just lose one of the few players in the team capable of lifting a floundering team. Heed this warning Liverpool fans. You never know what you’ve got till it’s gone.
