Hughes in for long haul at QPR

Mark Hughes has outlined long-term ambitions at QPR and is looking to bring in new players to revive the club’s Premier League campaign.

Hughes was appointed as the new boss at Loftus Road on Tuesday after the sacking of Neil Warnock two days earlier, as the QPR board became increasingly anxious about the side’s lowly 17th position.

Following discussions with the club’s hierarchy, the former Blackburn, Fulham and Manchester City boss revealed he was confident that the west London outfit’s ambitions match his own.

“My last couple of positions haven’t lasted as long as I wanted them to so now I want longevity,” Hughes told reporters.

“I’ve just had my first day at the training ground – I’m certainly not thinking of leaving any time soon.”

“The situation at the end of last season is one that has happened. I made the decision (to leave Fulham) that was the correct decision and I stand by that.”

“This excited me. My thoughts now shouldn’t be an issue to them.”

“I’m looking forward and really happy with the decision I’ve made, very excited of what is ahead of us.”

“I needed to get all the facts on the table and get an understanding of the story that QPR hope to have in the future.”

“So it’s important from my point of view that I understood that clearly, the fact that the club want to go places, build from the bottom up.”

“They want to ensure they are a successful Premier League club for many, many years and that fitted very comfortably with where I see my career needs to go now.”

The 48-year-old added that he was keen to invest in the January transfer window, but refused to be drawn into commenting on players linked with the club such as Chris Samba and Nedum Onuoha.

“There are lots of players out there that could come in and help us but it would be wrong for me to talk about them,” Hughes said.

“I think it’s fair to say if there are quality players available and they are attainable we will try and get them.”

“But January is historically a very difficult time to manage and if we are able to bring good quality players in then I will be delighted.”

“Certain areas need addressing but I’ll take my time, it is important to recognise the strengths of the group, I need to assess that.”
