Manchester City boss Mark Hughes insists Gareth Barry did not join the club just for the cash.
The England international is expected to earn around £110,000-a-week at Eastlands, after his £12million move from Aston Villa.
Hughes said: “Everybody at the level of the game we compete at is already a wealthy guy. For these guys, it’s not about money – it is about making your mark in the game.
“If Gareth can be successful in the future with Man City, then he will make his mark.
“He will be able to say he was in at the ground floor and that he helped us accomplish something.
“We are not going out throwing money at players who won’t help us.
“It is about making sure we acquire players at the right moment at the right time in stages of our progression.
“It is about getting to the next level as quickly as we can so we can compete at the top table.
“We need players such as Gareth because he is an established Premier League player and a leader of men.”
