Birmingham City are set to announce former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton as their new manager.

Birmingham, who will fight for promotion back to the English Premier League next season, have been without a manager since Alex McLeish quit on June 12 before joining rivals Aston Villa.

Hughton, 52, last held the position of Newcastle boss before being sacked last December with his side sitting in 11th in the Premier League.

He had helped the Magpies avoid relegation in a caretaker capacity a season earlier.

The former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland left-back beat fellow candidates Roberto di Matteo and Gianfranco Zola to the job.

Birmingham are expected to announce his appointment on Wednesday.
