Hungary beat the Czech Republic on penalties to advance to the quarter finals at the 2009 World Youth Championship.

The Hungarians took the lead through Mate Kiss after 15 minutes at Alexandria Stadium, but the Czechs balanced things with a goal from Jan Vosahlik in the 26th.

No more goals were scored in regular time. The Czech Republic did score through Michael Rabusic in the second minute of extra time, but it wasn’t enough as Vladimir Koman found the target for Hungary seven minutes later, 2-2.

In the penalty shoot-out, Marecek, Moravek and Reznik missed for the Czechs while only Szabo and Nemeth did so for the Hungarians. Nemeth had the opportunity to decide the match but had his spot kick saved by keeper Vaclik. Two penalties later though, Balajti was more successful and secured Hungary’s spot in the quarter finals.

A tough challenge awaits Hungary in the quarter finals, as it will be a clash with Italy on October 9.
