Schalke chiefs have been handed a major boost today when star striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar revealed he was open to a new contract offer.
The Dutch forward signed a two-year deal when he arrived from Milan in August 2010, which means that his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Huntelaar has been in magnificent form this season, leading pundits to believe that Schalke would not be able to keep hold of their prized asset.
However, the player has now revealed that he is willing to negotiate a contact extension with the Miners.
“If Schalke is willing to negotiate a deal, we will sit down and discuss this,” Huntelaar told Bild. “I am ready to listen to what Schalke would be prepared to offer.
“It would be an option for me to retire from the game as a Schalke player. We have a young squad and first team. To win the German Bundesliga with Schalke would be like a dream coming true.
The 28-year-old is, nonetheless, not prepared to rule out a possibility of a summer exit.
“Anyway, if there is another good club looking to offer me something, I would consider this also.”
Former Real Madrid striker has been scoring goals for fun this season, bagging 33 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions.
Schalke chiefs are desperate to keep hold of their star player, but his hefty pay check could prove to be a problem.
