´I made a mistake´ – Inzaghi apologies for red card in Udinese victory

Simone Inzaghi conceded that his nerves took control of his emotions during Inter’s narrow victory against Udinese in Serie A on Sunday.

Marko Arnautovic and Davide Frattesi had put the league leaders two goals ahead at the break, but Oumar Solet’s fine effort in the 71st minute made things interesting.

Inter had to rely on Yann Sommer to ensure they emerged with all three points, with the Swiss goalkeeper denying Solet and Lorenzo Lucca late on as they held on for a 2-1 triumph.

But as the game ticked into stoppage time, Inzaghi was shown his second yellow card after entering the field of play following a decision that went in Udinese’s favour.

Despite the 48-year-old having to watch the final few moments away from the touchline, Inter were able to hold on for their 20th Serie A win of the campaign.

“A splendid first half by the lads, where we deserved more than the two-goal lead,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“In the second half, before (Udinese defender Oumar) Solet’s goal, we hadn’t conceded too much. After that we lost our lucidity, against a team like Udinese that has always shown interesting things.

“I made a mistake at the end. I apologised to the referee,” Inzaghi added when questioned about his sending off.

“Foul on (Joaquin) Correa seemed clear to me, then came the corner kick in which Solet almost scored.

“Sometimes adrenaline plays bad tricks. Unfortunately, I won’t be on the bench next time.”

Inzaghi received his first caution just after the restart for his complaints when Marcus Thuram was brought down on the edge of the box, but a free-kick was not given.

He will sit out Inter’s trip to face Parma next weekend, while also explaining the team will be without some key players for their Coppa Italia semi-final against AC Milan in midweek.

“At the moment, we are in difficulty. Of our five substitutions, four were forced,” Inzaghi said.

“Arnautovic and Frattesi took two knocks and had to be changed, (Federico) Dimarco and (Matteo) Darmian had (only returned following injuries).

“On Wednesday we will also have (Kristjan) Asllani suspended. It would have been the fourth full match for (Hakan) Calhanoglu and I preferred to take him off.”

Inzaghi added that Mehdi Taremi and Lautaro Martinez as well as Denzel Dumfries would also not be available to face Milan, who were beaten 2-1 by Napoli on Sunday.

“We will move forward hoping they can give us a hand in the future because we will need them as we progress in the competitions,” Inzaghi added. “Then the Club World Cup will be important for us.”
