Bayern Munich suffered a real shock at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening, going out of the Champions League in the semifinals with a pair of late goals from Real substitute Joselu overturning Bayern’s lead gained through a fine Alphonso Davies strike.
To make matters worse, they were obviously wronged by the officials at the very end. De Ligt himself put the ball in the back of the net in the 13th minute of stoppage time, but only after referee Szymon Marcziniak blew his whistle due to a linesman’s flag being raised. The linesman had believed Noussair Mazraoui was offside in the buildup and hurried to raise the flag, not waiting for the attack to end as he should’ve done. The whistle going before the ball hit the back of the net rendered the VAR incapable of checking the decision, and Bayern left Madrid heartbroken.
It was a close call, but it appears likely that the decision was the wrong one, and De Ligt’s frustration was quite understandable.
“It’s a big, big mistake!”@mdeligt_04 was very frustrated with that late-offside decision. @adriandelmonte with the questions. #beINUCL #UCL #RealMadridBayern pic.twitter.com/3g6FjZaZYf
