Massimiliano Allegri singled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic and goalkeeper Christian Abbiati for special praise after AC Milan beat Fiorentina 1-0.
Milan retain top spot in Serie A thanks to Saturday’s win, which came courtesy of a wonder goal from Ibrahimovic and several top notch saves from Abbiati.
“At this moment in time we don’t have a real centre-forward, so the midfielders pushing up are important,” Allegri said.
“I do credit Ibrahimovic for his fantastic technique, but it seems almost normal for him. I also believe tonight the side showed real character, because the win came while under pressure.”
“We never lost our concentration and were gritty right to the end. Ibra is someone who brings a lot to his teammates, but the whole squad has reached an important mental balance. Abbiati also made a couple of truly extraordinary saves tonight.”
The win moves Milan four points clear of second placed Lazio ahead of Sunday’s remaining games, and Allegri lauded his players for their commitment in all competitions.
“There is Serie A and the Champions League. I am glad to note that the lads put in a strong performance every time, even when those who don’t get as much playing time are called upon,” said Allegri.
“I think Robinho is doing very well and in those moments when he goes out wide, the midfielders have to step up.”
Fiorentina went close to pulling back an equaliser several times throughout the match, and coach Sinisa Mihajlovic insists he could not have asked for more from his players.
“I didn’t like the first half-hour and they decided the game with a moment of magic from one player, but the performance of my side was excellent,” Mihajlovic said.
“They never really put us under pressure and I don’t know how many teams can create this many chances at San Siro. We emerge with no points, but gave a good account of ourselves.”
“Looking at tonight’s performance, I really cannot complain, as the players did what I asked of them.”
