Iker Casillas: Loss Leaves ‘Bitter Taste’

In case you missed it, England pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory against Spain on Saturday.

But the most impressive part of the win was that England featured many of their upcoming youngsters in the squad.

The likes of Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Rodwell (Everton) and Theo Walcott (Arsenal) were all featured by Fabio Capello.

That raises the question, should Fabio Capello take a risk and take youngsters to Euro 2012?

Despite matching Spain’s all-time record for international caps on Saturday, longtime Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas felt the result did injustice to the performance of the reigning European (2008) and World Cup Champions (2010).

“It is a shame we didn’t manage to win,” said Casillas.

“It leaves a bitter taste because, in my personal opinion, it was not the right result.

“We created a few more chances than England, who showed their strength at a dead-ball situation and managed to convert something.

“Other than that, I can’t really think that they created anything else throughout the game.

“The games we have found toughest to win have been against opponents who have set their stall out to work hard, run forever, close us down and really try and keep things tight in the middle of the pitch.”

Casillas also added that he has hardly thought about the record, but clearly he was just being modest.

“As for the record, it is not something I have ever really thought or spoken about,” he said.

“I suppose if I retired tomorrow I would realise I had been very fortunate. But at the moment all I am concerned about is playing Costa Rica on Tuesday.”

On the Three Lions side, Phil Jagielka hopes to have given Italian boss Fabio Capello a ‘selection headache’ ahead of the 2012 European Championships.

“I think a lot of people were questioning Mr Capello’s team selection and wanting to see our first team against their first team.

“But I think the result proves we do have strength in depth and it’s proved to be a good exercise. Not just for the first team players but for the lads on the fringe like myself.

“I hope [to have made a good impression], there won’t be many more games where we can play international games.

“There are only three of four more games before the squad is announced but hopefully that has given Mr Capello a selection headache.”
