Inter official Marco Branca has decided to disclose club’s reasons for selling Mario Balotelli and Mattia Destro.
The two forwards are regarded by some as the hottest prospects in Italian football, but they have both reached their peaks after leaving Giuseppe Meazza.
Mario Balotelli was sold to Manchester City in the summer of 2010, while Destro joined Genoa in the same transfer window.
Inter chiefs have since been heavily criticized for allowing the two players to leave Giuseppe Meazza, and Marco Branca has moved to explain reasons behind the two sales.
“Mario left following our treble success,” Branca told Sky Sport Italia. “Even after that, we had to think about finances.
“If the transfer market at the time could only offer the possibility to monetize then you have to make small sacrifices.”
Balotelli joined Manchester City for a fee of around €30 million, whereas Destro moved to Genoa in the deal that saw Andrea Ranocchia arrive at Inter.
“We sold Destro because of a defensive emergency. We needed to make an investment in a strong young Italian defender for the future.
“In order to get Ranocchia we had to sacrifice Destro. The dynamics of it were simple really.”
Both players have since showed a lot of promise playing for other clubs and they are expected to have a big role to play in Italy’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.
