Serie A has long since been viewed as the third or fourth best league in European football, despite playing host to some of the finest players in the world. Alas, as we look ahead to the future it seems and feels as if that’s gradually going to change, and there are several factors behind making that assumption a reality.

Entertaining Italians

In addition to bringing in high profile players from around the globe, there also needs to be a certain entertainment factor – and we certainly saw that earlier tonight as Inter Milan managed to overcome Fiorentina and register a vital 2-1 win to ensure they didn’t lose pace with the teams at the top of the table.

Throughout the course of the game Fiorentina, who had the better start to the Serie A season before this game, seemed to be much more comfortable on the ball. They were moving it around nicely, they had more shots on goal, and they were just about edging possession. Alas, if you don’t take your chances in this sport then you’ll be punished, and that’s exactly what happened on the stroke of half time when Mauro Icardi scored from the penalty spot to send the San Siro faithful into a frenzy.

Inter pinch it

Still, that didn’t dampen their spirits all too much, and it took less than 10 minutes for them to equalise upon coming back out for the second half. Federico Chiesa was the man who brought them level and they continued to threaten from that point on, but they just couldn’t quite pull the trigger. It made for frustrating viewing for their loyal fans, and things went from bad to worse when Danilo D’Ambrosio netted what would prove to be the winner with less than a quarter of an hour remaining.

Inter are slowly starting to come together as a unit following a mixed start to the season, meanwhile, Fiorentina need to go back to the drawing board and consider what exactly went wrong. Inter will once again play in front of their home fans this weekend against Cagliari, whereas Fiorentina will have to regroup ahead of a big game against Atalanta.
