The Serie A title race is one of the most electric things you could watch across the spectrum of European football as we edge closer and closer toward the end of the domestic season. The two frontrunners are city rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan, and while many will be divided on who they want to walk away with the strap, nobody can deny the entertainment they’ve provided for us.

Last night, Inter Milan set the standard for the weekend by defeating Empoli 4-2 in what turned out to be an absolute thriller.

Empoli take their chances

Empoli could sense the tension in the air at the San Siro and with nothing to lose, they were absolutely clinical with the opportunities that fell their way. They went 2-0 up within half an hour of kick-off and they did so through the kind of finishing that would’ve made you think they were much higher up in the table than they actually are. They didn’t do a whole lot after that, but it’s still worth praising.

Inter’s resilience

Inter Milan had 37 shots and 64% of the possession in this game. Those kinds of stats would indicate utter dominance and even though they didn’t quite manage to have it all their own way, this is the spirit required if you’re going to become champions. They’re doing everything they can to defend the title and that’s honourable, especially given how bleak things looked earlier in the campaign.

Attention turns to Verona

Tomorrow night, AC Milan will need to respond in a big way when they head to Hellas Verona for a crucial game in their title surge. They’re going to be favoured but as a result of their inferior goal difference, they can’t afford a draw. They need to secure all three points and if they don’t, the power and momentum transitions back over to their rivals.
