Serie A giants Inter Milan attempted to land a centre-back during the summer transfer window but saw their approaches for Shkodran Mustafi and Eliaquim Mangala get rejected.
With the summer market now officially closed, the Nerazzurri are thought to be planning the January swoop for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez, according to the reports from Tuttosport.
The 22-year-old Uruguay defender is currently topping the Inter Milan list and is expected to be at the centre of intense transfer tussle come the winter.
AS Roma and Juventus were also interested in the Uruguayan this summer, but Atletico Madrid were reluctant to sell any of their players due to their ongoing transfer ban which would have made it impossible for the La Liga side to sign any replacements.
Atletico Madrid are expected to make plenty of moves during the upcoming January market, but they could also lose a couple of first-team stars including French striker Antoine Griezmann. the in-form forward is priced at 4/1 to sign for either Manchester United or Barcelona during winter.
For his own part, Gimenez is under a €65 million release clause in his contract with the Rojiblancos which is said to be too big of an obstacle for Giallorossi and Bianconeri.
Inter Milan, on the other end, will have no problems forking out that amount of money as wealthy new owners have already proved to be more than willing to splash out on new signings.
