(GSM) – Brazilian side Internacional edged their way into the quarterfinals of the 2010 Copa Libertadores on Thursday on away goals after a 2-0, second-leg win over Banfield.
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg, but with a crucial away goal in hand, Alecsandro fired Internacional in front four minutes before half-time much to the delight of the crowd in Porto Alegre.
Then, in the 57th minute, Walter bulged the back of the net with the goal that had Internacional in position to advance despite the 3-3 aggregate score.
The defense of Internacional held out, and Banfield’s chances were dashed in the 82nd minute when striker James Rodríguez was dismissed for a second bookable offense.
Internacional now advance to face Libertadores holders Estudiantes in the next round.
