(GSM) – Internacional of Porto Alegre have won the Copa Libertadores for the second time in history, beating Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara 5-3 on average.
After Internacional won the first leg 1-2 in Mexico, Chivas knew that they faced a very difficult task in Brazil on Wednesday night.
But the away fans were given a reason to celebrate after 43 minutes when Marco Fabian put the Mexicans in a 0-1 lead, 2-2 on aggregate.
Internacional had been the more attacking side at that point and the Brazilians continued that approach in the second half with Chivas choosing to defend and aim for a counter-attack.
The home side leveled the score through Rafael Sobis in the 61st minute, after which Chivas were unable to switch to a more attacking tactic and do something back.
Leandro Damião added another in the 76th minute and Giuliano found the net in the 90th to secure the victory. Omar Bravo’s goal in added time could not change Chivas’ fate: 3-2 and 5-3 on aggregate.
Internacional had already won the tournament in 2006, then beating Sao Paulo in the final. Mexico remains without a Copa Libertadores victory.
