Helder Postiga scored a brace along with goals from Carlos Martins and Hugo Almeida as Portugal humbled their Iberian neighbours with a brilliant attacking display.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani caused havoc in the midfield, with Spain unable to deal with Portugal’s pace and flair across the park.
Nani nearly gave Portugal the lead inside 90 seconds only for Iker Casillas to save his curling shot.
Andres Iniesta and David Silva both had chances at the other end, with Silva unable to get his close-range header on target after being picked out by Joan Capdevila.
Portugal had a goal disallowed after Nani headed Ronaldo’s goal-bound shot over the line from an offside position, before Raul Meireles had his shot cleared off the line by Spain defender Gerard Pique.
A Portugal goal seemed inevitable and it came through Martins, who fired home the opener on the stroke of half-time after Casillas could only parry Ronaldo’s shot from a tight angle.
Ronaldo was substituted at the break, but that did little to stop Portugal and they were soon 2-0 up after Postiga scored a clever back-heeled goal four minutes after the restart.
Joao Moutinho was again the provider for the third goal, finding Postiga inside the area allowing the Sporting Lisbon forward to beat Casillas.
Spain slowly began to work their way into the game late on, before Hugo Almeida bobbed up in injury time, running onto Pepe’s through ball and beating Casillas with a curling shot.
