Inzaghi laments Inter´s lack of control in Supercoppa Italiana derby defeat

Simone Inzaghi believes Inter should have “controlled the game better” against Milan after conceding a late goal to miss out on the Supercoppa Italiana title.

Inter were looking to become the first team to win the trophy in four consecutive seasons, but gave up a 2-0 lead in the second half, with Tammy Abraham scoring a 93rd-minute winner to earn the trophy.

It is the first time since a run of three between November 2010 and August 2011 that the Nerazzurri have lost back-to-back games against their city rivals.

Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi had given Inter the lead, but they conceded just five minutes after their second goal, which is when Inzaghi felt their grip on the contest slipping.

“We must first of all congratulate Milan because they never gave up despite being two goals down,” Inzaghi told Sport Mediaset.

“On the move for 2-1, we lost a cheap ball when we should’ve been in control, then had several chances to go 3-1 up and Maignan made great saves on Carlos Augusto and Dumfries.

“Unfortunately, we then conceded for 2-2 and lost it. This is a painful defeat, but there have been painful defeats over these years and the team always got back on its feet.

“We go home to lick our wounds, we’ve got a few new injuries to deal with, but we have six games in 18 days, so we need to get right back on track.”

Inter were already missing Marcus Thuram, Benjamin Pavard and Francesco Acerbi through injury going into the match before Hakan Calhanoglu limped off just after the half-hour mark.

“These are very important players, but when you play every three days, we cannot rely on anyone,” Inzaghi insisted. “We need everybody and now hope the defenders can come back to help with rotation options.”
