AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has admitted that Pippo Inzaghi was frustrated at being left out of their Champions League squad.
Allegri decided to omit the striker from his 25-man list given concerns over the veteran’s fitness.
“I spoke to Pippo,” Allegri said.
“He didn’t take the news well, but that is only understandable.”
“However, I told him that we’ll wait for his return in January in the hope that he recovers full fitness by then.”
Inzaghi, 38, has a special relationship with European club football given his scoring record on the continent.
In 115 games, he has grabbed 70 goals and is just two shy of Raul’s 72 total. The former Real Madrid man is currently the all-time top scorer in European competitions.
Allegri has only four strikers available to him for the group stages – Antonio Cassano, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alexandre Pato and Robinho.
But the Inzaghi saga would seem to be a minor issue to Allegri, who prefers to look at the bigger picture.
“We’ve done very well in the transfer market, I have no doubt about it,” he said.
“We now have two important new players. Both are regulars in the national team, so I’m happy.”
“The two new players have the characteristics that we were looking for.”
“Once again I have to thank both the vice-president Adriano Galliani for the technical side of the deals, and the president for the economic aspects, because they have allowed me to bring in two excellent players.”
