Is Chris Coleman the right man for the Wales job?

Former-Fulham boss Chris Coleman is in talks with Welsh FA about becoming the manager of the Wales national team.

The circumstances of the job vacancy is obviously tragic with Gary Speed in the position before his untimely death last November.

Hard

The Wales national team job is a difficult one but it is made harder by the fact that Gary Speed had done such a good job with the team.

Speed was just turning around the fortunes of the Welsh side and whoever comes in will have to carry on his good work.

Wales has a relatively small group of players to choose from, so it’s always difficult to find players good enough to be competitive at international level.

Improvement

In the last year or so Gary Speed had inspired a resurgence in the Welsh national team. There seems to be a new generation of players coming through the Welsh game that could help the national team become successful in future tournaments.

Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale are two of the brightest young prospects in the British game. Both players are playing at the top level of the game, which is important for the national side. In previous years a number of the Welsh side were playing their domestic football in the English lower leagues.

Decent

It looks like its Chris Coleman who will given the task of continuing Gary Speed’s good work. I have always thought Chris Coleman was a decent boss. Coleman did a creditable job at Fulham in the Premier League but was sacked after the Cottagers went on a winless run of seven games.

Coleman has also managed Coventry, Real Sociedad and recently left Cypriot side Larissa with the club believed to be in financial trouble. Coleman at 41 is still young for a manager and is learning the game. He has shown some promise as a boss though and I think he would be a good man for the job.

Passion

Chris Coleman’s passion for his country was questioned during his time at Coventry. However he has since stated his love for the country he represented 32 times with such pride as a player. Coleman has also stated in the past that he loved playing for his country far more than any club he ever played for.

Passion is important to the Welsh fans and I’m sure they wouldn’t doubt Coleman’s commitment to their national teams cause. The pride has been restored in their national football team in the past year and the fans will be hoping that the team can kick-on.

Alternatives

At the moment I think that Chris Coleman is probably the best choice for the position. The likes of Ian Rush, John Hartson and Ryan Giggs have all been linked with the position. However none of them have much, if any managerial experience.

People may argue that Gary Speed didn’t have much experience when he took over but I think he was a special case. Not many inexperienced bosses come in and are successful at international level.

Progress

The progress of the team under Speed has to be maintain for the sake of the game in Wales. Coleman was a friend of former- Wales boss Speed and hopefully he will able to take the game forward and not waste his former-teammates efforts.
