Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers in recent seasons. His performances have reportedly attracted the interest of Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The Champions League finalists are now in a difficult situation, as the Dane’s contract expires next summer. Spurs are renowned for their shrewdness in the transfer market. Chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly keen to tie-down the attacking midfielder with a new contract this summer.
Worrying quotes why on international duty
When players are on international duties they tend to speak to the press in their homeland, which usually doesn’t end well. Well, Eriksen has been at it with Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, saying: “I feel that I am at a stage of my career where I would like to try something new,”
“I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening at Tottenham and it would not be something negative to stay. But I have also said that I would like to try something new.
“I hope that something will be decided this summer. That is the plan. In football, you never know when there could be a decision like that. It could be at any point. The best thing is always for it to happen quickly but in football things take time.”
The interview does not sound too promising for Eriksen’s chances of sticking around in north London for much longer. He did state that he would be open to discussing staying at Tottenham if another club does not come in for his services. He also stated that he was not sure if he will allow his contract to run down.
Real Madrid looking for a marquee signing
The story of Eriksen going to Real Madrid is a logical one. The Spanish giants are in need of a big revamp this summer. However, The Danish international is just one of what seems to be an endless of supposed summer targets this summer.
Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and PSG’s Kylian Mbappe are all supposedly high on the Spanish clubs shopping list this summer. All three would be marquees signings.
Eriksen although a very good player, he is arguably not in the same bracket of the likes of Mbappe and Hazard. The pair are truly world-class, while Eriksen is a level below.
The Danes performances in the final few months of the season were poor. Even in the Champions League final, he was highly ineffective, just like most of his Spurs teammates.
Eriksen could turn out to be a good signing for Real Madrid. However, the fee of £130million is doing the rounds, which looks optimistic for Spurs. At that price, the Spanish side could probably sign Hazard.
Los Blancos favourites to be Eriksen’s next club
It seems if Eriksen does leave Tottenham this summer, Spain will be his likely destination. Real Madrid are currently odds of 5/6 to be the Danes next club, with arch-rivals Barcelona next in the betting.
At the moment, where the Denmark international will be plying his trade next season is unclear. However, the above interview does seem to be a worrying sign that the playmaker is considering leaving the north London club this summer.
If he does leave, he will be hard to replace. However, he is not irreplaceable to Tottenham and if they get anything near the mooted fee for a player that is approaching the final year of his contract, then they have done well.
