Is Jose Mourinho set to return to old-club Chelsea this summer?

Speculation in the Spanish and English press has grown in the last few days that Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is set to return to former-club Chelsea this summer.

He stated after Real’s Champions League semi-final second leg defeat to Dortmund that he wanted to return to somewhere where he is loved, and it is becoming increasing likely that destination is Stamford Bridge.

Hated

Mourinho believes that Spain hates him, whether that is true or not probably depends on whom you ask.

The Spanish media do not appreciate his sometimes-brash manner of handling press conference and interviews.

It seems that opinion on the self-proclaimed ‘special one’ has created a divide amongst the fans. Even after Los Blancos beat Barcelona to the Spanish league title last season, some Real fans did not appreciate the Portuguese boss.

Loved

In contrast, the British media seem to love Mourinho and his often-controversial behaviour. The British media thrive on the controversial and the Portuguese is certainly that. In his first spell as Blues boss, he gave the media something to talk about on a near daily basis.

The Chelsea fans massively love him as well, as he brought trophies and glory that Chelsea had previously been unable to accomplish. It seems for the majority of Chelsea fans, he would be the ideal appointment.

Leaving

Current Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez is leaving the club at the end of the season. Benitez was always only going to be a short-term fix. The Spaniard was supposedly keeping the seat warm for former-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

However, Chelsea’s first choice boss chose to agree a deal with German giants Bayern Munich instead and it is now looking like a very shrewd decision with the Bavarian giants in the Champions League final. Mourinho is now the favoured boss to replace Benitez.

However, Benitez could leave the club having won the Europa League and helped the club secure a place in the Champions League for next season. This would be an achievement for Benitez and could help the Spaniard secure another big job elsewhere in Europe.

Failure

Jose Mourinho has been a failure in the eyes of Los Blancos supporters, because he has not brought home the clubs Holy Grail, the Champions League trophy. That was one of the main reasons Real appointed Mourinho, he had history with the competition.

The Portuguese boss obviously has not achieved his objectives in the Spanish capital and it looks like he will leave the Bernabeu with his mission incomplete. His team also look likely to finish second in La Liga this season behind bitter-rivals Barcelona.

Talented

If as expected, Jose Mourinho does return to Stamford Bridge this summer then he will inherit a very talented squad of players. They are a group of players that with the right nurturing could go on to achieve something very special.

Mourinho already has a very good relationship with some of the players from his first spell. The likes of Frank Lampard and John Terry are very close to Mourinho. The Portuguese boss’ return could mean Lampard staying for another season at Chelsea, with his future in doubt.

Chelsea have some very talented young players such as Oscar and Eden Hazard, who with Mourinho’s man-management skills could be major world stars, although those man-management skills have been questioned in the Spanish capital.

Difficult

Mourinho left Chelsea in a rather bitter manner, reportedly falling out with Blues owner Roman Abramovich before leaving the club. The pair will have to put past feelings behind them, if Mourinho is to return and be successful at Chelsea.

Mourinho is likely to speak with representatives of the Chelsea owner in-length before committing himself to a return. The Russian oligarch wants the club to be successful again and obviously, he believes that the Portuguese boss can make that happen.

End

Jose Mourinho revealed on Friday afternoon that he would decide on his future when the season finishes. The controversial boss is also receiving attention from nouvre riche French giants PSG.

However, it looks that Chelsea is a more likely destination for the talented, but controversial boss. Look out the Premier League it looks like Jose is coming home.
