Is Manchester City spending right?

Graham Fisher in Editorial, English Premier League 27 Aug 2010

Worth more than the German midfield?

Many people within the game of football question the amount of money paid for and to players. Most of those people point an accusing finger mainly in the direction of Manchester City.

Spent

In the two years since Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought City they have spent more than £300 million on new players.

Amongst the critics of the club is Sir Alex Ferguson, who earlier this month said that some of Manchester United’s rivals were going on a ‘Kamikaze spending spree’. It should be pointed out that he didn’t mention City by name, but you don’t need the brains of a rocket scientist to know who he was talking about.

Defend

Speaking to the BBC, City manager Roberto Mancini has attempted to defend the spending they have undertaken.

“Sir Alex has spent a lot of money in the past. Not this year, but in the past I think United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool were like us this year. This year we bought good young players. Only Yaya is twenty-eight, the other players are aged twenty-four or twenty-three and a good investment for the club.”

The players referred to by Mancini, who have cost the club a cool £124 million, are, James Milner (£26 million), Aleksandar Kolarov (£16 million), David Silva (£24 million), Jerome Boateng (£10 million), Mario Balotelli (£24 million) and Yaya Toure (£24 million).

Wages

It is not just the cost of buying the players that makes people raise an eyebrow, it is the wages paid as well. It has been reported that Yaya Toure, for example, is being paid quite remarkably in excess of £200,000 a week.

I guess that Mancini has got a point. Whilst City hold the record with the £32.5 million purchase of Robinho, United and Chelsea paid in excess of £30 million for Berbatov and Shevchenko respectively and Liverpool paid over £20 million for Fernando Torres.

Wrongs

Of course, two wrongs do not make a right and the fact that others have spent big in the past does not mean that spending this much now, in dire financial times for most people, is in any way acceptable.

The club also seem to be an easy target for charging more than anyone else would be charged for players. Unbelievably, City paid more for England midfielder James Milner than Real Madrid did for German international midfielders Khedira and Ozil combined.

Thrilled

I know that if I was a Manchester City fan I would be thrilled by the new signings and would take the attitude that if you have got the money, why not spend it. However, looking on from the outside it all seems to be a little bit unsavoury.

What do you think? Is it good or bad that City are spending so much?

yeah. good luck city, if you lose less than 3 players this January window, you can consider yourselves champions.

now there’s a coup’de’etat within the City ranks. Players are divided wether to support Mancini or not, too early in the season and this kind of problem arises. All i can say – GOODLUCK

lastly, only someone who’s jealous of the Red side of Manchester would make an attack like that on me, or any other United fan.

They spent more in a certain amount of time than United and Chelsea COMBINED. . . over the long term, they haven’t spent more, but this summer and I think last summer if I remember correctly, they have. forget the guys that have come out of City’s youth academy, and those still there and playing for England. We all know, even you Lobsterbacks, that England are no longer consisted of players like Hurst, Charlton, Banks, or any other 66 WC winner, we all know that England are not up to the hype your papers put on them. As for their club success, the youth kids haven’t had as much success as any of the United ones. the FF’s (thanks for the mention MadeintheUK, lol).
If you had told the 4 year old me that I would be supporting Manchester United, the best English team and the measurement of success for all other clubs in the EPL, and that we would be successful, I wouldn’t have really cared or believed you. Just cause I’m American doesn’t matter worth shit.
A team that is comprised of big names (Hola Real Madrid) doesn’t necessarily mean everything will come your way. City needs chemistry, more than what they have. Meanwhile, United’s FFs have played alongside each other since Academy days, so the chem is like being stuck like glue. Teamwork and chemistry is what wins titles, FAR more than money.

Just because you have the right to do something doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

Kane..what a tool. so City are to blame for England being poor for several years are they..?!! Ha ha.. clueless bitter comments from a numbskull who thinks the same 3 teams should dominate the Prem for all time.

Brad…another misguided tool, check the facts.. 31 players have come through City’s youth academy and played in the prem, 4 of which are currently first team regulars at City, and 2 are England regulars.. so basically you are clueless and full of bitter bullsh*t, hardly suprising considering you are a Yank glory hunter who’s never been anywhere near Manchester.
Oh and one more fact to educate you, City still haven’t spent as much as Utd and Chelsea have done to buy success..

  • Brad

Maybe City should take a leaf out of United’s book and combine new signings with young talent from the youth academy and older guys who never transfered away from City of Manchester. . . . then they’ll get some success.

and since when was your national team a powerhouse anyways?
as for the topic, no one said it better than cularfin, week 38 will answer the question

i for one, loves to debate, but regarding this issue, debating about it is pointless. All we could do is watch the progress of Manchester City if all the money they spent can provide them with silverware this season. It’s on Week 38 that the question of this article will be answered.

and some people just don’t know when to shut up. . . . I wasn’t putting up some “love story” of Man UNITED’s (not U’s) habit of producing rather than buying. . . .for the most part. . . . and taking note that it has given the Red side of Manchester more success than the Blue side. . . but now I think of it, it wouldn’t matter whether or not United went with buying or producing, with a manager like Fergie, you’d be winning trophies more out of fear of the hairdryer treatment more than for the want of winning glory . . . holy shitballs of fire. . . actually don’t know where I got the Fergie’s Fledglings from, but I didn’t make that muck up.
just look at cularfin’s comment if you’re finding me too hilarious. he’s got a point: city have the right to spend the money, but it’s hurting football (why would anyone want to see so many top footballers (notice I didn’t say soccer players, since I’m American) and it seems like City are saying “hello world, look at me I’m so f—ing rich, I’m throwing the moolah left and right at guys, and we’re gonna win stuff just by doing that, rather than work for it.”
That’s the piont I’ve been trying to tell you guys, just listen and stop laughing, I may be here all week but what does that matter?

    lol. . . . . . . .

  • cularfin

the owners of manchester city has every right to do what they have to do to strengthen their squad. But, it is hurting the world of football. But bottom line is, you cant buy prestige in football, it must be earned by winning trophies.

Fergie’s Fledgling’s. Some of the best players who rose up to the EPL. Obviously better than City’s, looking at the FF’s accomplishments, compared to the entire squad(s) of Man City for the past 30+ years.

the only real considerable graduates out of that list would be shaun wright phillips, etuhu, ireland, and maybe sturridge. But how can you compare those to the Busby Babes or the Fergie Fledglings? easy: the United guys end up winning trophies, the City guys. . . DO NOT.

  • madeintheunitedkingdom

    0 0

if you’s wer from england u’s might no this – from citys youth sysem mancini has given 7 graduates their debut since starting, not bad – outta all epl teams ,since the epl kicked of city have produced the most international player’s from any club-10 i believe … they even call it the famous platt lane kindergarden – ill name a few city babies who have made it through since 98-99 and i think ye’s might no a shit load of them –

    shaun wright-phillips
    bradley wright-phillips
    dickson etuhu
    tyrone mears
    joey barton
    wee willo flood
    glen whelan
    nedum onouha
    stephen ireland
    big micah richards
    ishmal miller
    micheal johnson
    daniel sturridge
    kasper schmeichel

all these playes,s still plying their trade in the prem, thats leaving out the 7 mancini debut’d – you should see the list of pro’s in total they,ve pumped out – what ever the system is doing id say the rest off england would be delighted with a piece of it –

  • Thompo

£300 million on new players, and they still won’t get close to a title. Well, the entire City team is full of money hungry bastards. Take Silva for example, he didn’t want to play for city because they’re shit and didn’t make it into CL football for this year. What do you know… They throw a couple thousand more pounds at him and he accepts.
I agree with Brad, it’ll be interesting to see how many players hand in transfer requests during January due to a lack of game time, I know Given will be among them…

  • Brad

    0 0

but why do they have such a large YDS if all they do is throw money at players that won’t even get playing time as SUBS?

Also, I’d like to see which City players will be saying they want out when the January transfers come around. It’s really no good having so many superstars if you’re not gonna have every single one of them out on the pitch every game day.

  • Brad

Even with United in millions of pounds of debt (which I tend to think is the Glazers’ fault, even thought they’re my fellow Americans), we’re still sustaining the team, even with guys like Rooney who get paid a lot (though he said in his autobiography he just cares about the football). Manchester United will always be challenging for the title as long as SAF is around, as he is capable of bringing guys who aren’t egomaniac superstars but real footballers who want to win by working for the title. Even after Giggs replaces him (eventually), I know Giggs will do the same.

  • joe

    0 0

its not just about being a big side with big players you need to be able to sustain it for years on end and rebuild the team to be a big club, chelsea spent all there money, now there teams aging we can all see how many seasons they can keep challenging for the title and if they can rebuild the team

  • Brad

I have little use for hearing a fucked up city loser. spend away then, and see how much dept it gets YOU. we’re not fucked, as we have chemistry, not money. I’d go with team chemistry over cash anyday. obviously, the blue waffles (haha) prefer just havin a buncha rich skunkbags.
We’ve still got a superior coach. Sir Ferguson (call him by his formal name, only us Red Devils plus the reporters have the right to call him Fergie)

you called me jealous earlier eh? Why’d you call me and my club glory hunters? Don’t judge a man before you walk two moons in his shoes. . . every team wants glory, every coach and every player wants to hold that trophy up. thing is, Manchester United PLAYS for the trophy, we put our work out on the pitch and score goals and get the points to win em. City thinks they can BUY the title. if you didn’t have money, you’d be fucked. but then again, you’re fucked anyway.

You would be spending if you weren’t in debt mate yeah we will see when the derby comes around fergie is scared because he knows about football the glory hunters don’t every press conferance fergie has it’s about city why ? Because he knows sooner rather than later were going to win things were the team on the up matee

  • Brad

hell, I’m not afrad of some fat rich bastards who think the titles are gonna be served up to them on a silver platter. I know Manchester United has better players, especially when it comes to homegrown players. Rooney, Giggs, Scholes, G. Neville, Evra, Van der Sar, Carrick, Fletcher, Vidic, Ferdinand, Berbatov, Macheda, and co. are on a level FAR SUPERIOR to the blue shit of City. When the Manchester Derby comes round, you’ll see what I mean: the blue blood will be spilled all over the floor, and the Red Devils will survive to win.
You can’t win a title by making a lotta expensive players come to town. Your team will have hardly any chemistry. it’s not having a million superstars that wins, but having a bunch of guys who know each other better than anyone else who are. Man City have a buncha guys just tossed together, more or less.
United haven’t spent much recently. Berbatov, Hernandez, and Smalling, that’s it.

You THINK City will start winning things. . . . come and tell me your opinion after United have won back the title and City are still stuck trying to brake into the Big Four.

  • Luke schofield

As I support Manchester city we have every right to spend all this money UTD have done it in the passed and so have CHELSEA and they still are !! Also real Madrid might not be in the premier league who is complaining about them spending all this money? no one most utd fans are just jelous and scared of city spending the money and bringing quality players in because they no sooner rather than later it’s going to be blue side of Manchester winning things not the red

  • Brad

    0 0

No it’s not right. It seems as though Manchester City are His/Her Royal Highness (no offense to the Englishmen here, or to their King/Queen) at tea time, waiting for the title to be served up to them on a silver platter, all because of the marquee names they have now. It’s the same with Real Madrid. Both clubs feel as if they gotta spend a bunch of money, and the trophies will just be magnetized into their trophy cabinets. It’s not going to work. It’ll take time for all the new signings (apart from the Toure’s) to gel and get some considerable chemistry, which is what’s the most important thing to winning: knowing your teammates after years of work together.
I find it ridiculous that UEFA had a lot to say about Real Madrid’s spending (though they didn’t do anything about it), but haven’t had any qualms about City’s cashing in. Money won’t win a title.
AMS is right about teams that bring players up from their own youth academies. When you look at how those teams succeed, compared to those that just spend away, you’d think City and Madrid would focus on doing the same.

    AMS,

My view is that I would love a multi-billionnaire to buy my club Watford, and for whoever the manager was to spend billions on buying us the Premier League title.

I know that is totally wrong but that is the problem with being a football fan. It is great to have morals and want things to be right, but above all, we want our team to be successful.

I’d feel guilty about everything that was wrong with how we had won the Premier League, but it wouldn’t stop the party!

As for the rule that UEFA could bring it. I would support it because I know it would be right. I also think they would have no chance of implementing it.

Such an awesome amount to spend , only wish it could buy them the premiership , sincerely is not just about how much spent to sign this players , but how much every wk it cost city to pay their wages every wk, it’s alarming, seems every part of d society are gaining from city, tax office, villa’s, car salers , ladies etc ,. This same plater will be loaned out or sold for less very soon ..

I know that in the situation any team would spend the money if they had it, but it still does not make it right. Manchester United and Arsenal as well as Tottenham and Villa to a lesser degree have worked their way to the top by investing in their youth systems and bringing up prospects, such as Giggs, Scholes and Beckham and getting the best out of their players, earning the money they could then spend. While im not against the influx of cash to troubled teams, clubs that have earned that right should be able make bids with out having the prices driven to insanity by these mega rich clubs. I think that UEFA needs to implement some sort of rule that disallows this sort of kamikazee spending. I am a regular reader and would like to know if the writers have any take on this hypothetical rule.

Seriously…SAF would talk smack about City even if they were homeless…

But, it’s great that they are spending money. In fact, they aren’t just spending money – they’ve gone that extra step and provided friggin’ stimulus funds to some clubs. Who knows if it will work for City, but think of how many other clubs have benefitted from City’s gratuity… I don’t see it being a good sustainable business practice, but as long as they have a multi-billion $$ cushion to sit on, you might as well go all out. If it all comes crashing down, well don’t say nobody warned you.

I just think some people are not used to such lavish spending and find it insane…there seems to be this public backlash b/c people can’t wrap their heads around City’s rationale for spending such a large amount of money…For example, would you spend $175USD on a 2cmx2cm square piece of CR’s jersey w/ 3 colors on it encased on a 1/1 trading card? Probably not – you’d probably want to go buy the whole jersey for that kind of money no? Not me tho…and yes, i’ve been called a few bad words for that decision, but I don’t regret a penny of it…i’m in the business of collecting sports memorabilia and I will pay to have the best of what i’m looking for. When you have a love for something, there is no price too high to have it… I just think everyone would agree if everyone had the money to spend on it.

I think Man. City have all the rights to spend as they wish, but hopefully the owners do not loan the investments to the club and will ‘donate’ the investments which they made to the club. This way City can only benefit, and if the owners one day get tired of football and decide to buy some other toy(s), they can not send the club into a banktruptcy by claiming back their cash.

Chelsea did indeed do the same a few years ago, and even Milan already did it in the 80’s and 90’s, so what rights do these clubs have today to complain that another club does the same today.

For the premier league it can only be good, since it will create more exciting games which is good for business, and for us football lovers it gives us more joy to watch great teams battle for the prices.

  • Brad

hell, I’m not afrad of some fat rich bastards who think the titles are gonna be served up to them on a silver platter.

You would be spending if you weren’t in debt mate yeah we will see when the derby comes around fergie is scared because he knows about football the glory hunters don’t every press conferance fergie has it’s about city why ? Because he knows sooner rather than later were going to win things were the team on the up matee

  • Luke schofield

Your a one man team mate without Rooney use would be nothing wait another year or so when giggs scholes Neville van der sar owen all retire your fucked then !

  • Brad

    0 0

City thinks they can BUY the title. if you didn’t have money, you’d be fucked. but then again, you’re fucked anyway.

its not just about being a big side with big players you need to be able to sustain it for years on end and rebuild the team to be a big club, chelsea spent all there money, now there teams aging we can all see how many seasons they can keep challenging for the title and if they can rebuild the team

  • Brad

    0 0

Even with United in millions of pounds of debt (which I tend to think is the Glazers’ fault, even thought they’re my fellow Americans), we’re still sustaining the team, even with guys like Rooney who get paid a lot (though he said in his autobiography he just cares about the football). Manchester United will always be challenging for the title as long as SAF is around, as he is capable of bringing guys who aren’t egomaniac superstars but real footballers who want to win by working for the title. Even after Giggs replaces him (eventually), I know Giggs will do the same.

  • Brad

    0 0

Also, I’d like to see which City players will be saying they want out when the January transfers come around. It’s really no good having so many superstars if you’re not gonna have every single one of them out on the pitch every game day.

  • Brad

just because you have the right to do something doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. . . they should try homegrowing players rather than throwin out money on players that’ll be gone in January.

near 200 mijon euros spend this summer?
rofl it’s funny 200 miljon can save peoples lives yet these noobs buy the crappiest player each year over and over.
Manchester City will not get any prices this year, insted use your money to develop youth insted of buying all the players money can buy and still suck!!

Manchester City, all I can say is LOL!!!

brad i think ur crazy in what ur speaking…..i no that all money united have made is by their own means…….but does every1 forget abt united financial power for years….its bit unfair now kinda like formula1 but man u barca even madrid had the football world at their mercy…..as a liverpoll fan i honestly think it spices it up a bit….. defo improvede the epl

  • madeintheunitedkingdom

also might id add to you’s guy’s who dont know…..manchester city have the largest youth development system in all of england, and rep of ireland…..followed closley by blackburn…rubber stamp that1 remo

  • Brad

    0 0

but why do they have such a large YDS if all they do is throw money at players that won’t even get playing time as SUBS?

  • madeintheunitedkingdom

    0 0

poo poo…..they have player’s in their first team that through the ranks than liverpool&chelsea – and have just let go of ireland…….it was the same chelsea came along, spending money…..its settle down soon and every1 will accept them……i dont agree with them but i dont mind them either,i like the fact there’s a new player at the table, instead of the usual top4….and all of these top player,s would be playing at a big club anyway, y not england…..they’re no worse than madrid or united ever where – out spending all of europe …….

  • Brad

    0 0

but MCFC have taken it further than United. and they still dont develop players thru their YDS as much as they spend cash on players.

if you’s wer from england u’s might no this – from citys youth sysem mancini has given 7 graduates their debut since starting, not bad – outta all epl teams ,since the epl kicked of city have produced the most international player’s from any club-10 i believe … they even call it the famous platt lane kindergarden – ill name a few city babies who have made it through since 98-99 and i think ye’s might no a shit load of them –

    shaun wright-phillips
    bradley wright-phillips
    dickson etuhu
    tyrone mears
    joey barton
    wee willo flood
    glen whelan
    nedum onouha
    stephen ireland
    big micah richards
    ishmal miller
    micheal johnson
    daniel sturridge
    kasper schmeichel

all these playes,s still plying their trade in the prem, thats leaving out the 7 mancini debut’d – you should see the list of pro’s in total they,ve pumped out – what ever the system is doing id say the rest off england would be delighted with a piece of it –

  • Brad

    0 0

the only real considerable graduates out of that list would be shaun wright phillips, etuhu, ireland, and maybe sturridge. But how can you compare those to the Busby Babes or the Fergie Fledglings? easy: the United guys end up winning trophies, the City guys. . . DO NOT.

  • madeintheunitedkingdom

    0 0

micah richards, joey barton, micheal johnson are also top footballers……..u’v now strayed away off the mark altogether……you’s wer talking abt city buyin all their player’s and producing none … when truth br told they’r one of the main producting line’s in all of england … my work here is done ……please do me a favor and please dont use the speak fergie’s fledglings, dont no where u got it

  • Brad

Fergie’s Fledgling’s. Some of the best players who rose up to the EPL. Obviously better than City’s, looking at the FF’s accomplishments, compared to the entire squad(s) of Man City for the past 30+ years.

the owners of manchester city has every right to do what they have to do to strengthen their squad. But, it is hurting the world of football. But bottom line is, you cant buy prestige in football, it must be earned by winning trophies.

  • Brad

    0 0

and some people just don’t know when to shut up. . .
That’s the piont I’ve been trying to tell you guys, just listen and stop laughing, I may be here all week but what does that matter?

    lol. . . . . . . .

LOL…..i love this guy if i could bottle him and sell him over here id make a fortune…..mate u produce me somthing wher it says fergie’s bla bla bla ,ff’s,jkys, xyz,s what ever ill take a bow and say sorry for laughin at ye or with ye…..until then i cant wait to tell the lads at work what waffle some american has been preaching…..printing this as i type…anyways, back to the topic, yet AGAIN ur away off the mark,i never said i agree with the amounts of money been thrown around i just like it cause its more interesting, hence us havin this debate….its sexy cause there’s a new kid on the block…..b4 it was just united united united, then maybe magpie’s or blackburn would have a run….then arsenal came to the fray then chelsea, and liverpool then up’d it and now city next hopfully spurs….and there’ll be another just u wait, leeds, liverpool, magpie’s,qpr, forest, also which ever sharholder loses out on arsenals take over will surely be interested N another club….defo hasta be another……sit bck an enjoy the competition as it was ment to be,every team bar1 is competin against a more financial superior team, and they’ll deal with it only now its happeneing to the big boys – and please please lay of the american stuff, who care’s abt that shit,u’s americans probably out number us pats on this site anyway – and puttin stuff in brackets all the time, whats that abt??as they say in australia build a bridge and get over it mate……..

i for one, loves to debate, but regarding this issue, debating about it is pointless. All we could do is watch the progress of Manchester City if all the money they spent can provide them with silverware this season. It’s on Week 38 that the question of this article will be answered.

  • Brad

haha M. City lol 300 mil wasted seriously these guys won’t win any prices trust me all a bunch of money grabbing sobs…
Good for English football, hell no I am getting sick and tired of clubs getting owned by rich people from all over the world it disgust me.
No wonder our national team is utterly @#$@$@# for several years now ;(

Sorry, but I am oldskool, still see liverpool, arsenal and m. united the only 3 that owns the PL.

  • Brad

City will give those 3 a good run for the money, but in the end I can’t see anything but failure for them and more players leaving than arriving this January.

    @kane
what’s clubs getting owned by rich people from all over the world have to do with your national team being utterly @#§
and since when was your national team a powerhouse anyways?
as for the topic, no one said it better than cularfin, week 38 will answer the question
as for the english boys i have to say, i didn’t understand a word you said, was that english really?

a win at chelsea and a drubbing by arsenal, City is not consistent, the question is back again to wether they are spending right.

Maybe City should take a leaf out of United’s book and combine new signings with young talent from the youth academy and older guys who never transfered away from City of Manchester. . . . then they’ll get some success.

  • StonyG

    0 0

  • madeintheunitedkingdom

    0 0

    brad tell him abt fergie’s fledglings……or ff’s for short……lol

  • Brad

    0 0

  • Brad

lastly, only someone who’s jealous of the Red side of Manchester would make an attack like that on me, or any other United fan.

  • cularfin

now there’s a coup’de’etat within the City ranks. Players are divided wether to support Mancini or not, too early in the season and this kind of problem arises. All i can say – GOODLUCK

yeah. good luck city, if you lose less than 3 players this January window, you can consider yourselves champions.
